A sweet sixteen is a traditional birthday party for girls to have when they turn sixteen years old. In parts of the United States and Canada, sixteen is the age at which one may obtain a driver’s license. It is also the age of consent in many states, hence it is viewed by many adolescents as an important milestone. It is the American counterpart of the Spanish and Latin American tradition of a Quinceañera, with both parties having the same sense but in Spanish-speaking countries it is at the 15th birthday.

What is a Quinceanera?

Quinceanera PartyQuinceanera is a young Latina woman’ celebration of her fifteenth birthday, which is celebrated in a unique and different way from her other birthdays. The word is also used to refer to the young woman whose 15th birthday is being celebrated (analogous to the word “cumpleañera” for “birthday girl”). The closest equivalents to the Quinceañera in the English-speaking world are the Sweet Sixteen or, in more affluent communities, a debutante ball at the age of eighteen. In some cases, though, the birthday girl has a choice of a quinceanera or a car.La Quinceanera”

The tradition of the quinceanera comes from ancient Mexican society. The origin of the quinceanera can be traced back to the Aztecs about 500 B.C.
