The Importance of an Event Theme

When you’re hosting a fabulous event, you want your guests to be excited about attending it. You also want them to remember it after they’ve left. For those reasons, picking a great event theme is incredibly important.

These days, it’s no longer enough to have a simple party or function. People expect more out of their events. They like to be entertained and they like their functions to be memorable and unique. The right theme can help ensure that your event is both of these things. However, a theme can also be helpful to you as well.

When you decide to work with a particular theme, you’ll usually find that the rest of your event planning goes a lot more smoothly as well. You can select your menu, decorations, and even entertainment to reflect the theme itself.

For instance, if you’re going to have a Hawaiian Luau for your child’s college graduation party then finding food (pineapple ham, tropical drinks), decorations (tiki lanterns and leis), and entertainment (traditional luau style music) can help pull your event together in a breeze. It’s a lot more memorable, too, then a standard graduation party that might consist of sandwiches, potato chips, and CDs on the entertainment system.

If you want to be creative in choosing a theme then try doing something a little out of the ordinary. Make your October birthday celebration a Halloween party and have guests come in costume. Have a “Christmas in July” fundraiser event and decorate with mistletoe and Christmas trees. For your wedding anniversary, consider an Italian themed party where you serve lots of pasta and have a wine tasting.

You don’t have to be very extravagant to have a good themed event either. Some people make the mistake of spending a lot of money on big, expensive decorations. Generally, though, as long as you decorate the main areas (tables, food service station, and stage) it will compensate for the rest of the space. Of course, if you have a large budget then you might want to do more.

The key to keeping a good theme is to make sure it all ties together. Details are important. Guests will remember some of the smaller things that you do. They also tend to like things that are individualized. At a Fall Festival, for example, invest in some small pumpkins and supply your guests with paint and paint brushes. Have a pumpkin design contest. For a glamorous red carpet night, create VIP tickets with the guests’ names on them and use them as place card settings at the tables.

It can be just as much fun planning the event as it is actually attending it. Just remember to have fun with it and don’t be afraid to be creative or do something unexpected. In the end, your guests will be sure to remember it, have a great time, and talk about it later. Those are the best things that can happen when it comes to nearly any type of function or party.
