Event Security – Tips to Keeping Your Event and Your Guests Safe

When you’re planning an event, you probably don’t immediately think of event security as one of your priorities. There are some instances, however, when taking precautionary measures are important. Venue location, for instance, might necessitate having someone on hand to ensure that everyone is safe. An event that has a lot of alcohol might also call for a few security measures as well.

So what can you do to make sure that everyone at your event has a good time but goes home all I one piece?

First, consider the location of your venue. If it’s in an undesirable location or even just surrounded by a lot of empty buildings or large, unlit parking lots then having a few security guards onsite can be helpful. When you rent the venue, ask about security. In some cases, you might be paying a few guards as part of your rental fee so it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Secondly, consider insurance. The venue should have its own insurance but if you’re having a large group of people at your house, barn, or just on your property in general then you’ll want to check and see what your homeowner’s insurance covers. If someone has an accident you don’t want to be financially responsible for their medical bills.

Next, think about the type of guests that you are inviting. If you are having an “invitation only” event then you’ll need someone at the door who is able to check invitations and allow people to enter. This should be someone other than yourself since you’ll want to play host or hostess to your guests.

If there is going to be alcohol involved then having someone acting as security inside the premises as well as outside the premises can be helpful. Oftentimes, you can hire off duty or even retired policeman to act as security guards or bouncers. These should not actually be part of the guests, but rather should be onsite to help ensure the safety of your guests.

Most people have cell phones these days, but having the number to a local taxi company handy is a good idea. You don’t want your guests to leave intoxicated and get into their vehicles. When you’re trying to keep your guests safe, you also want them to get home in one piece.

If you have the extra money in your budget then hiring a valet is a great way to make sure that your guests aren’t wandering around dark parking lots or alleyways looking for their cars. A valet will not only make your event look classier, but it can keep the guests safe, especially when after a long night of being entertained their guards might not be up as much.

Security can be just as important as any other aspect of your event planning. You want everyone to have a great time when they’re at your event, but you also want them to be safe and secure as well.
