Cold weather boating tip
-
When you're done fishing and before you leave the launch ramp, trim the outboard motor all the way down, remove the kill switch and turn the engine over for a just a second to pump out any water that may still be inside the motor. Remove any mud or plant debris from the boat or equipment and thoroughly drain livewells or anywhere else water may have pooled to stop the spread of invasive species. Storing the boat high and dry for two days before fishing a different body of water can also help, especially when its cold outside.

Sailboats bad weather tip
-
Sailboats and others made of wood or fiberglass are particularly vulnerable, since their profiles project above the water surface and act as lighting rods. In the event of an approaching storm, lower antennas, masts, outriggers and even graphite fishing rods; all are equally dangerous electrical conductors. Cease all fishing activity and stay off the radio. If it is not practical to return to shore, consider dropping anchor(s) and riding out the bad weather.

California also is second in the nation in boat sales: In 2006, Californians generated $1.21 billion in new powerboat, motor, trailer and accessory purchases. The state has 83 boat builders and more than 8,000 employees in the boating industry.
