Paint the boat's bottom: When boating in salt or brackish waters a fouled bottom is like a dull knife. It takes a lot more fuel to push your boat through the water.

- The boating market today is flooded with four-stroke outboard engines equipped with electronic fuel injection, which get 25 percent better fuel use than the older two-stroke outboards.Make sure the engine has the right prop. If the prop is too big or small, fuel economy will suffer. If the prop is too big, the engine will burn more fuel to get on a plane. If the prop is too small, it will require the engine to turn up more RPMs to find the sweet spot.
