  • Smoke Alarms in Boats - Fire Safety
    • Smoke alarm technology has developed significantly during the past several years with more features being available, such as optical sensors, long life batteries and the facility to ‘hush’ the alarm when, for example, cooking food. It's strongly recommended that boats with overnight accommodation are fitted with at least one smoke alarm. Boaters should use smoke alarms as part of their fire action plan to detect and ultimately escape from fire on the boat. Early detection of a fire while boating can help deal with a small fire before it gets out of control or give everyone aboard the chance to escape without being overcome by smoke or poisonous fumes, especially while sleeping and that's why unaware of the fire danger.
  • Basic kinds of marine engines
    • There are three basic kinds of marine engines and three types of fuel delivery systems. Engine types include outboard, inboard, and stern drive. Each has its own advantages, but the most popular-at least for pleasure boats-is the stern drive engine. It involves an on board engine that drives the boat through a shaft powering the propeller beneath the craft.The three types of fuel delivery systems are direct-fuel-injection, electronic fuel injection, and carbureted fuel systems. If being ecologically responsible is a priority, you might choose to avoid the two-stroke carbureted system. Although they are most affordable and simplest to keep in running order, they are known polluters and they are definitely not known for conserving gas. They also have a high oil-to-gas ration, requiring 2.5 ounces of oil per gallon of fuel. Carbureted fuel systems do offer fast acceleration, though, and lots of power. Pleasure boaters particularly like them for bass fishing and water skiing.Direct-fuel-injection is more expensive up front, but it is cheaper to operate. Fuel goes directly to the cylinders for better fuel efficiency. Emissions are low, as well. They idle as smoothly as silk and are not given to vapor lock in warm weather. Similarly, electronic fuel injection offers low emissions and unvarying distribution of air and fuel. It offers great throttle response and regular cold engine starts.
  • Man Overboard
    • 1. Wear your life jacket. All of the BoatU.S. volunteers participating in the testing program wore a life jacket - before they voluntarily went over the side. All agreed that a fully clothed adult with no buoyancy would have difficulties attempting to get back aboard using any type of ladder. 2. You don't need to spend lots of money for a functional boarding ladder. Testers found an affordable model fashioned from four-inch wide yellow webbing proved best. Simplicity also ruled the day as the highest-ranked ladders all had fewer than three steps. The ideal ladder length, measured from the water's surface to the bottom rung, averaged 20 inches. 3. Some ladders work better with certain types of boats. Hard sides or soft? Low or high freeboard? Depending on a boat's construction or deck layout, most ladders performed well with one particular kind of vessel, and did poorly with others. It's important to match the ladder to the boat. 4. Before you head out, your boarding ladder needs to be positioned so it can be reached from the water. Also, attaching the ladder to the wrong spot on a narrow, lightweight boat can increase the chance of capsizing, especially if there is wave action. 5. Practice is a must. Many ladders were difficult to use on the first try. Take the time on a warm, sunny day to fine tune any adjustments, get in the water and use the ladder. Some ladders threw testers off-balance when weight was placed on them, causing the device to swing underneath the boat. Only practice solved this problem.
