Maine Factoid:
Private schools are less common than public schools. A large number of private elementary schools with under 20 students exist, but most private high schools in Maine are actually semi-private high schools. This means that while it costs money to send children there, towns will make a contract with a school to take children from a town or MSAD at a slightly reduced rate. Often this is done when it is deemed cheaper to subsidize private tuition than build a whole new school when a private one already exists.

1898 - Pierre and Marie Curie announced the existence of a new element, later to be named radium.
Radium (Latin radius, ray) was discovered by Marie Curie and her husband Pierre in 1898 in pitchblende/uraninite from North Bohemia. While studying pitchblende the Curies removed uranium from it and found that the remaining material was still radioactive. They then separated out a radioactive mixture mostly consisting of barium which gave a brilliant red flame color and spectral lines which had never been documented before. In 1902 radium was isolated into its pure metal by Curie and Andre Debierne through the electrolysis of a pure radium chloride solution by using a mercury cathode and distilling in an atmosphere of hydrogen gas.

Diners: People and Places reviewed by Jim Sweeney
-
Gerd Kittel's "Diners: People and Places" shows the range of
diner architecture. The book has 68 color photos by Kittel. He knows
how to arrange the scene so you linger over the image: sun lighting
up interior or exterior metal and glass, neon glowing in twilight,
a brightly lit diner looming out of a foggy night.
