With a population near 40,000 between 1300 and 1400 AD, the Mississippian city of Cahokia, in what is now southern Illinois, was the largest city within the future United States until it was surpassed by New York City between 1790 and 1800. About 2,000 Native American hunters and a small number of French villagers inhabited the Illinois area at the time of the American Revolution. Railroads and John Deere's invention of the self-scouring steel plow made central Illinois' rich prairie into some of the world's most productive and valuable farmlands, attracting immigrant farmers from Germany and Sweden. Northern Illinois provided major support for Illinoisans Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. By 1900, the growth of industry in northern cities and coal mining in central and southern areas attracted immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe, and made the state a major arsenal in both world wars. - Spirit of Yachting 2008 is a series of ten half-hour programmes featuring some of the very best yachting events taking place this year. Starting with the Rolex China Sea Race from Hong Kong to Subic Bay in the Philippines, the series moves to Miami and the recently completed Rolex Farr 40 World Championship before heading to Europe for the Rolex Capri Sailing Week, which takes place in May. - Human fat-powered boat?! Sounds weird, strange, odd. I found these news just recently and thought may be someone else haven't heard of fat-powered boat. Peter Bethune, New Zealand adventurer, built a boat that is powered by human body fat. He is going to sail across the globe on the new super high speed fat-powered boat called Earthrace.
Smoke Alarms in Boats - Fire Safety
- Smoke alarm technology has developed significantly during the past several years with more features being available, such as optical sensors, long life batteries and the facility to ‘hush’ the alarm when, for example, cooking food. It's strongly recommended that boats with overnight accommodation are fitted with at least one smoke alarm. Boaters should use smoke alarms as part of their fire action plan to detect and ultimately escape from fire on the boat. Early detection of a fire while boating can help deal with a small fire before it gets out of control or give everyone aboard the chance to escape without being overcome by smoke or poisonous fumes, especially while sleeping and that's why unaware of the fire danger.
