Alaska Factoid:
During World War II, three of the outer Aleutian Islands — Attu, Agattu and Kiska, 460 miles from Japan — were invaded by Japanese troops and occupied between June 1942 and August 1943. Their recovery became a matter of national pride. The construction of military bases contributed to the population growth of some Alaskan cities.  Alaska Artists
